Debt

With the number of people out of work today, more people than ever are looking for ways to
eliminate debt and get their lives back under control. In the last 20 years credit became much easier to obtain and
just about anyone could get a credit card or in many cases, several credit cards. This was all well and good but
eventually the bills came due. Unfortunately they could not have come due at a worse time as millions find
themselves out of work.
Taking the First Steps
Just as you got into debt one step at a time, the only way to eliminate debt is by taking it one
small step at a time. There are several different ways that you can work towards clearing out your debt and getting
to the point where you will be able to keep far more of your paycheck than you are currently able to. However the
first thing that you should know is that you should avoid the majority of the companies that advertise that they
can eliminate credit card debt, most of them will tell you the same information that you can get for free.
Who to Turn to
Thankfully in the UK there are reputable agencies whose main function is to help eliminate
credit card debt and for that matter get the rest of your finances under control. The first people you should
contact when the debt collectors start ringing your phone off the hook are
organizations such as the Citizen's Advice Bureau (CAB), the Consumer Credit Counseling Service or the National Debtline. Any one of these agencies can contact all of your
creditors and get them to leave you alone for thirty days.
This will give you a month's peace and quiet, allowing you the time to think while you figure
out exactly what you are going to do about the mountain of debt you feel as though you are under. In many cases if
you contact your creditors first, they will be happy to work with you and make out a payment plan that you can
afford to pay. Their thought is that it is better to get some of the money you owe them as opposed to the
alternative of getting nothing at all.
Who Can Help?
You have a few choices to make depending on your debt load and your income. If you after you add
up all of your payments and your total debt is less than £15,000 you may be able to file for a Debt Relief Order.
However you must have less than £300 in assets including the house you live in and less than £50 left over each
month after all of your essential bills are paid. You can apply for this type of debt elimination through the Cab and able to abide by the conditions set up for 12
months after which you will be debt free.
You can apply for an Individual Voluntary Agreement which will allow you to make a single
payment through an IP or Insolvency Practitioner who will negotiate a deal with your creditors to accept a smaller
payment and reduce your total overall debt. The IVA is only usable for non priority debts and is a good way to
eliminate credit card debt.
If your credit has not been damaged yet your other option is a debt consolidation loan. This
will allow you to create a new loan to eliminate debt that you already have and
make on single more affordable payment with the idea of paying your total debt off within 5 years or so. Before you
hit the panic button as the creditors start calling demanding your payments seek help, there are agencies out there
that can help you stop the calls and eliminate the debt you have amassed.
