Credit Card Debt – You Can Get Rid of Your Credit Card
Debt
Over the last two or three decades the number of banks and stores that have given out credit
cards has soared to epic levels. With the downfall of our current economy this has left many people looking at
bills they simply can no longer afford to pay for the credit card debt they have amassed. In most cases people are
looking at the various methods of credit card debt elimination to try and get their debt under control and paid off
without totally destroying their credit rating by defaulting or filing for bankruptcy protection from the
courts.
What to do First
If you are just getting to the point where you realise that you need to do something to clear
credit card debt before it gets out of control and lands you in front of the
magistrate, have faith as there are several different ways to get a handle on your credit card debt and pay it all
off without having to deal with going to court of just walking away from it and taking your chances. The very first
thing you need to do is do not give in to panic as this will only make things worse, calm down and if necessary
call the National Debt Line or the Citizens Advice Bureau.
These agencies are there to help you; they can contact all of your creditors and get you a 30
day breathing space that will stop your creditors calling you for payments. Now that you have a little room to
breathe gather up your credit cards and see how much you owe. If your credit is still intact, consider applying for
a 0% interest on balance transfer credit cards. Of course this means taking out another credit card, but by
transferring your balances to a 0% card you can make one big payment each month and get things paid off much
sooner.
Other Courses of Action
If you are unable to take advantage of one of these credit cards to consolidate your credit card
debt or it has already been turned over to a collection agency, do not worry as this can actually work to your
advantage in the UK. You can legally cancel credit card debt if you know how to go about it. Unfortunately there
are many companies in the UK who claim to be the only ones who can help you to write off credit card debt legally.
The problem with many of these companies is that they are going to charge you as much as half of what you owe to do
something you can do yourself.
If your debt has gone to a collection agency or has changed hands from the original lender that
you borrowed money from, you may be in luck. In this modern computer age, just because your credit card debt has
been bought out by another company does not mean that the original contract went with it. If the new owner of your
debt cannot produce a copy of your original contract with your signature on it they will have to legally write it
off as they cannot legally prove the debt is yours. You do not need a lawyer or expensive agency to help you with
this, it is something you can do yourself.
