Debt Collection – How to Deal with Debt Collection
Agencies
For many people who have found themselves deeply in debt and unable to pay the bill, there is
only one thing they fear more than being in debt. They fear being harassed by the dreaded debt collection agencies.
In the UK as well as many other parts of the world these companies have earned in many cases a well deserved bad
reputation for the tactics that they resort to as they attempt to get people to pay their debts off.
This can turn the problem you are already experiencing by not being able to pay all of your
bills and in many cases not sure where you are going to get the money to pay next month's electric bill or put food
on the table if you try to pay your outstanding credit debts. The worst part is that many of these debt collection companies go far beyond using debt collection letters to try and
get you to pay your bills. There is however some things you can do to learn to cope with and get rid of these
agencies once and for all.
What You Can Do
The phone may be ringing off the hook and you have no intention of answering since you already
know that it is another debt collector trying to get you to pay back the money you owe your original creditor or
now that they have bought your debt to pay them instead. One avenue of debt collection advice
says that instead of ignoring the phone you should answer it and be as polite as possible, no matter what the
person on the other end is like. Remember that no matter what they say, they cannot hurt you and they really do not
know what you are like.
These debt collectors merely see a name and a number on their computers and a number to call.
They have no idea what type of person you really are or that until recently you always paid all of your bills.
These people simply want you to pay them the money they are owed, it never enters into the picture that if you had
the money you would already have paid the bill and they would not be calling you. You need to be able to look
beyond what they are saying and point out that you are doing the best that you can. If you are already working with
a debt counseling agency or a lawyer refer them to that person.
Are There Laws to Protect Me?
Perhaps the biggest fear that people who have gotten threatening phone calls and debt collection
letter have is whether or not a debt collection agency can continuously harass them in the course of attempting to
collect the debt. The truth of the situation is that in the UK there are very strict guidelines regarding what a
debt collector can and cannot do. If they call you constantly or let your
neighbors know that they are there to collect a debt they are breaking the law.
The same applies if they threaten you with physical violence or tell you that they are going to
come to your house and remove your possessions to pay the debt off. There are a host of things they cannot do, take
the time to read the laws and follow the advice the give. The best way to deal with debt collection is to find a
way to get your debt under control and pay it off in a way that you can afford and then you will avoid having to
deal with any form of debt collection.
