It seems like no matter how hard you try to get on top of your debt, the payments just keep mounting up and you end up further in debt, leaving you wondering where to turn for help. If this sounds familiar to you, do not worry as you are not alone. Millions of people in the UK wake up every morning to face the same situation as the UK has seen a tremendous growth in personal debt in the last decade. While the times were good people had no problem meeting their payments, but as the economy tumbled people began looking for debt elimination programs to help them shed their debt.

If you are thinking about debt elimination then you have at least taken the first step, the bad news is that you are still in debt and have not done anything about it yet. There are several different programs and loans available to help you eliminate your debt or at least reduce the payments down to something that you can afford and stop the phone from ringing off the hook with debt collectors demanding their money.

Understanding the Problem and What is Available

In all reality the problem is relatively simple, you have far more going out in credit card and unsecured loan payments than you can currently afford to pay and you have no idea what to do about it. Odds are that up until now you have continued to borrow from Peter to pay Paul, but have finally come to a point where you can no longer do this as there is no one left to borrow from. Now you have more bills than you can pay and still expect to be able to pay your living expenses and put food on the table.

There are multiple forms of debt elimination available in the UK such as debt consolidation loans, debt negotiation plans, debt settlements, debt management programs and debt counseling. Each of these has their own merit and which one is best for you depends on your situation.

How they Work

If your credit has yet to be destroyed you may be able to take out a debt consolidation loan, while this will still leave you in debt in most cases it will reduce your monthly payments down to one affordable payment leaving you enough to get back to living your life. You can also talk to a professional counselor at one of the free services like the Citizens Advice Bureau. These professionals can help you establish a debt management plan by contact your creditors and making arrangements with them to reduce your debt and take a smaller payment. You make one monthly payment and the agency will disburse.

This program is designed to eliminate your debts in 5 years or less. You can also try contacting your creditors yourself and try to work things out through debt negotiation. In some cases they might consider reducing your debt by 40-60% and taking a lower payment until your debt is paid off. With so many different options available to you, the first step you should take once you have assessed your total indebtedness is to seek professional counseling. These trained professionals can assess your situation and explain which option might be best for you.
